Seventeenth Summer by Maureen Daly or My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

You have to be in a “romantic” mood to read this book. I was not, so I kept putting it down. Instead I’m going to comment about my favorite book, My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. This book has romance, comedy, sisterly love, drama. My favorite character is the lawyer, I love his dog jokes! My Sister’s Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. It asks questions like, Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child’s life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart, or let others lead you? 13-year old Anna has helped her sister fight leukemiea all her life. Anna has provided platelets, bone marrow, and even stemcells to ensure Kate’s survival. But when their parents ask her to donate a kidney, Anna has had enough. She enlists the aid of a lawyer and announces her intention to sue for control of her own body.

But what about Seventeenth Summer and teen readers today? Will it have appeal, why/why not? Or, why do you think that teens today would appreciate/like the Picolt more than the Daly? Along with what the story is and what you think about it, what about the world of teens and how the story connects to them?
